In 2002, I made a decision to go to college at the age of 42 at Indiana University Southeast that is located in New Albany, Indiana (Southern part of Indiana, near Louisville, Ky.) and is affiliated with IU.
It has been a dream of mine since I was 17 years old to go to college but was never able to afford it until that point. I went part-time to school and worked full-time at a local candy factory that is also located in New Albany, Indiana, called Squire Boone Cavern and Village.
My boss, who at the time, was going back to IUS, to get a Master’s Degree in Business, encouraged me to pursue my dream. He knew I had a lot of potential and would do well in college. And for the first two semesters I attended, he would work around my schedule, help me to get started, who to talk to about things, along with challenging me into contest who could make better grades, him or me. It helped me out greatly as I grew into becoming the college student I wanted to be.
However, my personal life was going down hill and my marriage of 24 years ended in July of 2005. Then, in November of 2005 my father started to become very ill with cancer so I made a decision to move to Bloomington to be closer to him, the rest of my family that resided here and transfer to IU.
By August of 2006 I moved in my apartment and began my college career here at IU as a full-time student. My father is still battling cancer but seems stable enough now where I can enjoy the time I do have with him. And just this last year I remarried (yes, again) to a man that believes in me continuing my education by always backing me up with anything I do.
It’s been a hard road, one that has defiantly been very challenging to me. But, I would never trade any of my experiences with college and the decisions I made.
